This Victorian house ought to be the home of a large family where children delight in playing hide-and-seek and exploring its many nooks and crannies. The very large, all-wood house is of monumental scale and makes a significant presence on the property. In keeping with that, the designer presents a landscape plan that complements the uniqueness of the architecture and balances its weight and scale. A circular driveway solves the problem of the garage being set so far to the back of the house and allows easy access to the front door. The driveway brings the visitor to a wooden platform that links the house to the drive and extends the wraparound porch into the landscaping. The smooth, flowing lines of the landscape extending around the house and to the street are clean and pleasing to the eye, while not competitive with the many angles of the house. Low-growing plants are chosen for the front of the house, in order not to hide the home's interesting architectural features. A large tree at the front right corner anchors the house and is repeated in three other areas to frame the view and balance the massive scale. The uniqueness of the architecture demands that drama be carried through to the landscaping, which is accomplished with the pond and foundation on the outside of the driveway. Berms were added around the pond to enhance its setting. The weeping tree beside the pond also emphasizes the unique nature of the house and adds special interest.
