Plan details

Want a beautiful home with the potential for huge energy savings? This 1,534-square-foot design is designed with the goal of net-zero energy consumption. Living spaces are positioned to take advantage of passive solar benefits if the home is oriented with the kitchen, living, and dining room windows facing south. Structural features, such as 12” exterior walls and raised-heel roof trusses, allow for increased insulation. The roof layout accommodates solar PV panels, and in the version built in the photos, holds two solar thermal collectors to supply the home's hot water needs (backed up by a tankless water heater for days when the sun isn't out). The floor plan’s amenities are thoughtful as well: check out the window seat in the dining room, an extra space for trash and recycling in the garage, and bench and coat closets on the way in from both main entrances. A built-in desk and book shelf are welcome details near the kitchen, where a peninsula snack counter provides space for casual meals. Relax by the fireplace in the living room, with a view of a side patio. In the sleeping wing, the master suite boasts a large shower, two sinks, and a walk-in closet. A full hall bath serves both the second bedroom and the nearby study, which can be used as a third bedroom.
