Let the colors of Old Glory shine in your yard with this red, white and blue flower garden. Designed as a dramatic island bed to be planted in any open, sunny location in your yard, this versatile garden features combinations of flowering perennials and annuals carefully selected so the bed blooms from spring through fall in an ever-changing display of the colors of the flag. The long-blooming annuals, which should be planted in the spots where bulbs flower in spring, provide a constant mass of color against which the perennials bloom in an exciting sequence. Red can be a difficult color in the garden, since scarlet tones, with their hints of orange, clash terribly with crimson shades, with their hints of blue or purple. Likewise, blue comes in many tints, not all of which combine well with the various reds. White flowers separate and calm the strong blues and reds of this bold color scheme, giving the garden brightness and sparkle. The designer selected the flowers for their pure, bright colors, choosing ones that blossom in the red and blue tints that look great together and that will assuredly look superb when planted as the centerpiece of your backyard. The designer planned the garden in a somewhat formal fashion, with blocks of plants laid out around a wood-chip path and central flagpole. The path affords you access to the flowers for easy planting and tending, while bringing you right into the garden where you can enjoy the flowers at close range. The bold and dramatic color scheme of this island flower bed is further emphasized by the formal nature of the garden plan. Geometrically laid out in changing bands of flowers, the garden forms a dynamic centerpiece for any summer yard. @season:Shown in Summer Michael J. Opisso
