Plan details

The designer cleverly employs stone, the dominant feature of Early American homes like this one, to unify the landscape and create a snug entry court. The flagstone-capped stone walls forming the courtyard make a handsome backdrop for a variety of compact evergreen shrubs, some chosen for colorful fruit, others for bright blue-grey needles or glossy green leaves. A cobblestone edging beautifies the driveway and leads to an inlaid rectangle of cobbles that serves as a gateway to the courtyard. Inside the court, an inlaid flagstone arch points the way to the front door. Mortared flagstone continues up the steps and onto the landing, while in the side yard individual square flagstone pavers rest in a low groundcover. Reinforcing the sense of privacy created by the courtyard is a threesome of large trees, chosen for their fine upward-sweeping canopies and fiery fall foliage. For ease of care, each tree is underplanted with leaf-absorbing groundcovers, long-blooming perennials and spring bulbs. The designer selects a small specimen tree on the right side of the lot near the house for its seasonal blossoms, great fall color and attractive branching pattern. Also shown here is home plan HPL07-2916 by Home Planners. Low-growing shrubs, which won't need pruning to keep them from obscuring the house and stone wall, are important features in this easy-care design.
