Plan details

An abundance of trees and shrubs surrounds this French Country home, making it look more like a private, wooded estate in Europe rather than a suburban lot in New York, Iowa, or California. The flowering deciduous trees lined up along the front of the property are repeated near the entrance, leading your eye toward the front door. A single tree with an elegant weeping form and purple foliage provides an accent near the extension at the back of the house, and creates a focal point from the driveway entrance. ~~Some aspects of formality, while creating the grand look demanded by the architecture, are modified for ease of care. For instance, the dense, upright conifers set in a neat row along the driveway are allowed to grow naturally instead of being clipped into a formal hedge, which would require more labor. On the opposite side of the property, a staggered row of narrow conifers is also spaced for minimum pruning. The smooth expanse of green grass at the front of the lot gives the illusion that the house sits farther back than it really does, yet it is small enough to maintain without professional help. ~~A house this size needs plenty of parking space for family and friends. The designer breaks up the large expanse of driveway with decorative brick inlays and with a planting peninsula, which shields the garage from direct view. A parking bay near the front walk provides convenient parking for visitors, who can stroll right up the front walk toward the secluded entry courtyard after getting out of their cars. Also shown here is home plan HPC559 by Hanley Wood Home Planners. Lots of trees and large shrubs endow a suburban lot with the mood of a French Country estate. To minimize pruning, the plants are carefully chosen for their upright shape, compact growth, and ability to stay within bounds over the years.
