Plan details

This design shows how much landscape interest can be packed into a tiny lot with a limited front yard and only a few feet of setback on either side of the house. The yard contains all the key features you'd expect to find on a more expansive property, but it doesn't feel crowded. In fact, the design makes the lot seem larger, while its small scale makes it easy to maintain. A sense of spaciousness is developed by secluding the passage to the house and revealing it in stages as you walk to the door. The designer takes advantage of the rectangular area formed by the juncture of the garage and house to create a private entryway. A charming wooden arbor bearing a flowering vine invites visitors to approach the gated picket fence enclosing the entrance. Once inside, the visitor is surrounded by greenery. To prevent the various elements from looking disjointed, stonework is used in the walk leading from the drive to the front door and on the house facade to tie the design together. In keeping with the sparseness of the front and side yards, small-scale shrubs, perennials, and groundcovers are used for the foundation and other plantings. Many of these feature colorful foliage, flowers, and fruit, which stand out beautifully against the patches of green lawn. A trio of narrow flowering trees adds dimension to the small lot without overwhelming it. Mulched rings under the lawn trees facilitate mowing. A narrow lot is no excuse for a ho-hum landscape. This design creates a private setting featuring an assortment of easy-care trees, shrubs, perennials, and groundcovers.
