Quick as lightning and jealous of "their" garden, hummingbirds provide exciting backyard entertainment and are easy to attract with the right plantings. Although many people supply them with a sugar-and-water feeder, hummingbirds need vitamin-rich flower nectar for complete nourishment. Hummingbirds love red. They busily investigate all red flowers--and even red objects bearing little resemblance to flowers--preferring trumpet-shaped types accommodating their long beaks. To thrive in a garden, hummingbirds also need a source of water. The designer created this backyard plan as a charming informal setting to attract hummingbirds from spring through fall, while arranging colors and plant textures to make a visual picture that will please you and your family throughout the year. The birdbath, surrounded by some of the hummers' favorite annual flowers, punctuates the circular lawn area. Just beyond, a wood swing suspended from a cozy arbor provides the perfect spot for watching. Evergreen shrubs and tall shade trees provide nesting sites and, at the same time, enclose the yard with overhead foliage. The spacious terrace echoes the curving lines of the lawn contours and makes a fine place for an outdoor party. Besides feeding on the plentiful red, orange and pink tubular-shaped flowers used in this design, the hummingbirds will make your yard practically insect-free; they feed on tiny insects, snatching them from midair and collecting them from the flowers they visit. Avoid using pesticides, which will reduce the number of these insects and perhaps directly harm the hummers. This pretty backyard plan provides the basics to attract hummingbirds--water and a spring-to-fall display of nectar-rich flowers. This plan also includes the amenities necessary for comfort--a patio, a swing, an attractive privacy screen and privacy plantings.
