Plan details

This design proves that "drought tolerant" and "low maintenance" don't have to mean boring. This attractive backyard looks lush, colorful and inviting, but relies entirely on plants that flourish even if water is scarce. This means you won't spend any time tending to their watering needs once the plantings are established. Even the lawn is planted with a newly developed turf grass that tolerates long periods of drought. The designer specifies buffalo grass, a native grass of the American West, for the lawn. The grass has fine-textured, grayish-green leaf blades, tolerates cold, and needs far less water to remain green and healthy than most lawns. It goes completely dormant during periods of extended drought, but greens up with rain or irrigation. To keep the lawn green throughout summer, all you need do is water occasionally if rainfall doesn't cooperate. And mowing is an occasional activity, too! This slow-growing grass needs mowing only a few times in summer to about one inch high. To keep the grass from spreading into the planting borders--and to reduce weeding and edging chores--the designer calls for a decorative brick mowing strip surrounding the lawn. Deciduous and evergreen trees and shrubs interplanted with long-blooming flowering perennials--all drought-tolerant--adorn the yard, bringing color every season. Against the fence grow espaliered shrubs, which offer flowers in spring and berries in winter. The vine-covered trellis shades the roomy, angular deck, where you can sit in cool seclusion and relax while your beautiful backyard takes care of itself.
