Take your cue from Mother Nature: if you love the rocky outcroppings of the mountains or deserts, that may be the way to go in your garden. Boulders--single and sturdy, combined into groupings, or stacked for low walls--bring to a garden a solidity and substance that are impossible to create any other way. And rocky sites create an environment for a variety of special plants. The designer raises the soil level of the yard slightly to create a curving contour at the back of the yard. The soil is retained by a wall of large boulders on one side and rough-chiseled natural stones forming a simple, low curvilinear dry wall on the other side. Underneath the trees and between the rocks and boulders, various creeping plants spread and spill their way toward the lawn. A combination of drought-tolerant deciduous and evergreen shrubs and trees provides softening foliage and flowers. Flagstone pavers allow for circulation from the garden gates to the stone-paved terrace, which features two levels that have only a stair-step difference in height. Several types of creeping, fragrant paving plants mingle between the stones, releasing their scent when walked on. Rock garden plants mix in a chaos of color among the scattered boulders in the gravel-surfaced planting bed near the patio. The permanent structure provided by the plants, large boulders and paving stones creates a garden of year-round beauty.
