Plan details

The style of this house with its raised and covered front porch is reminiscent of a time when streets were wide and children played beneath the shade of large, stately trees whose branches overhung the street. The symmetrical period design of this farmhouse calls for a straightforward, traditional landscape design. To reflect that period, the design for this corner lot uses a perimeter planting of large trees whose canopies frame the view of the house from overhead, providing a sense of tranquility. ~~A traditional front walk leads from the street to the steps and the front porch; the straightness of the walk is in keeping with the symmetry of the house and the clean lines of the landscape design. Low-growing, spreading shrubs frame the entrance to the front walkway along with fragrant, summer-flowering perennials, which offer a pleasing aroma to greet visitors. ~~The foundation planting features low-growing, flowering shrubs and perennials so that the handsome stone piers and latticework along the porch foundation remain visible. Taller spring- and summer-flowering shrubs provide easy-care beauty in the borders along the driveway and at the property line. To contrast with the tall trees around the perimeter of the property, small, informal trees soften the corners of the house near the side doors. At the other corner, a large tree balances the design. The entire landscape is unified with the same groundcover used throughout. Also shown here is home plan HWEPL00536.
