Plan details

The success of this landscape design relies on using simple, clean lines and forms to balance the squareness and flat facade of this classic New England home. The foundation planting curves around and extends beyond the house, making it appear longer. The outlines of the shrub borders on both sides of the property transcribe a huge circle, enclosing a circular lawn area that perfectly balances the mass of the house. The curved walkway leading from the driveway provides a graceful entrance to the house, and the brick inlay at the front of the driveway announces the transition from public street to private residence. ~~Large trees situated in both the lawn and the planting borders integrate the two areas, soften the facade of the house and provide privacy and cooling summer shade. Flowering, deciduous and evergreen shrubs are used along both property lines for spring color. Rather than using an underplanting of groundcovers to unify the planting beds, the designer chooses to dress up the beds with an organic mulch of wood chips, in keeping with a tidy, neatly groomed New England look. ~~Fencing on each side of the house separates the front yard from the backyard and helps to elongate the lines of the house. It is partly camouflaged by three small trees, which help to block the view beyond the front of the house and balance the visual weight of the garage. Also shown here is home plan HWEPL00545.
