With two entries close to each other at the front of the house, it is imperative that the landscaping for this gambrel-roof Colonial home defines the formal or dominant entry—the one to which a visitor should go. This is accomplished by framing and blocking views. Notice how small ornamental trees frame the large entry court that leads to the main door. The tree nearest the house blocks the view of the door leading to the family room, and it also frames the walk and adds color and interest to the landscape. A low-growing evergreen hedge behind the tree aids in screening, so the visitor perceives only one walkway and one door. Access to the secondary door from the backyard, garage or driveway is by a walkway at the back of this screen planting. The weeping evergreen and summer-flowering shrubs bordering the outside of the front walkway direct the view up the walk and to the front door. This bed extends into a curving border of trees, shrubs, perennials and groundcovers, which is echoed on the other side of the property. These border plantings provide privacy from neighbors or a side street and, since one cannot see behind the house, further define the front garden. Also shown here is home plan HWEPL03222.
