Keywords: 1 Story
The quaint character of this traditional Cape Cod home calls for an intimate, comfortable landscape that reflects the formality of the house without being stiff or unfriendly. Notice how the repetition of curves throughout the landscape works to unite the design into a cohesive whole. The clean curving line of the large shrub border, which sweeps directly from the foundation planting toward the street, is repeated in the smaller curves of the planting borders along the street and in the shapes of the lawn areas. The stone walk and the driveway feature flowing curves. The front walk attractively leads to both the driveway and the street, where guests will probably park their cars. ~~Loose, informally-shaped trees soften the lines of the house and complement the curves of the landscape. By positioning these trees at the front edge of the property and in the center of the walkway, the designer buffered the view of the house from the street, creating a sense of privacy while framing the home. Evergreen foundation shrubs used near the house match the traditional style of the architecture. Elsewhere, flowering shrubs provide seasonal color. ~~This landscape design works successfully because the gentle, repetitive lines and forms, which remain apparent even in the winter, unify the property, making it seem larger than it is.
