18th-Century Charleston, South Carolina, was known for the "single house," one room deep, with the narrow end facing the street. This adaptation recalls the 1750 home of Robert William Roper, with tall pillars and a handsome brick exterior crowned by a balustrade. The original has a fragment of a Civil War cannon on its roof, lodged there in 1865 when the cannon was blown up to keep it from Sherman's troops. (It was deemed safer to leave it there than to try to remove it.) This version adds a family room and a garage to the floor plan. The sunken gathering room opens to the long hall through a colonnade and is flanked by the dining room and a library. Upstairs is a sumptuous master suite with a through-fireplace and three other bedrooms.
