The first step the landscape designer of this traditional split-level took was to make the rolling grade of the property an asset rather than a liability. The designer created a strong sense of entry with brick paving that angles from the driveway to the front door. These angles do more than add interest to the squareness of the house--they also present a pleasing sequence of entry, transition and arrival. This sequence is not only more visually appealing than a flat walkway coupled with a set of steps leading directly to the door, but also makes maneuvering from the driveway to the front door easier. The brick-and-timber combination for the walks and retaining walls offers a pleasing, informal quality that echoes the brick on the house. Creating an entrance with various levels also allowed the designer to extend one of the steps into a retaining wall, which defines a key planting area. The small ornamental tree in this bed acts as a focal point and enhances the entry by providing privacy and enclosure. The sweeping bed lines, together with the three large shade trees, serve to unify the changes in height of both the house and the landscape. Also shown here is home plan HWEPL00395.
