Cape Cod Variation

The Saltbox home plan is a no frills, straightforward design with extra living space.

A variation of the two-story Cape Cod house plan, the Saltbox Colonial home adds a one-story full-length shed extension to the rear. The steeply sloping, wood-shingled roof extends further in the rear than the front to accommodate this extension. The extra living space provides an affordable option for those who wish to add a family room or kitchen/dining area, while maintaining a traditional look to the street.

The Saltbox home plan is often without ornamentation, with shingle or clapboard siding. Small, often paired, diamond-pane casement windows illuminate the interior as do the Saltbox's side gables.
