Dramatic—in a big way—describes this deck design. This is a multipurpose addition that also offers some very specialized features. First, it is an excellent choice for a hillside or slope—it is elevated well above the ground level to accommodate a steep slope or a rugged, rocky surface. Second, if the building lot is flat, it is simple to add a patio below—the upper portion of the deck provides shade from above. Sun, shade, and protection from the weather are available just about any time. If a lower-level patio is not desired, the area beneath the deck could be converted to a large storage area. Because this spacious deck, with its 950 square feet of space, wraps around the entire rear of the house, it has access from the dining room, gathering room, and study. The design of this deck, with its sharp angles, would lend itself well to a contemporary or vacation home. Sturdy railings are, of course, necessary with elevated decks. Benches in three separate areas provide adequate seating. A single stairway, located in the far right-hand corner, provides an exit to the ground. Note: This deck is attached to its adjoining house with a ledger strip to make the addition more structurally sound.
