A Functional and Attractive Children''''s Play Yard
0 Sq. Ft.
If there's one thing that can be said about children's play areas, it's that their function usually far outweighs their attractiveness. However, this backyard design presents an excellent solution to a functional children's play yard that is still pleasing to look at. The backyard includes all the fun elements a child would love. On one side of the yard are a play structure for climbing and swinging, a playhouse, and a sandbox enclosed in a low boardwalk. A play mound a perfect place for running, leaping, and holding fort rises from the lawn on the other side of the yard. These play areas are integrated into the landscape by their circular form, which is repeated in the sandbox, play mound, boardwalk, and the sand areas under the playhouse and play structure. The curved brick patio and planting border carry through the circular theme. The stepping stones leading to the play areas also follow a circular path a playful pattern that invites a child to "follow the yellow brick road." From the house and patio, the views of both the garden and the play areas are unobstructed, affording constant adult supervision from both indoors and out. The border surrounding the yard creates a private setting that offers a changing show of flowers from the masses of shrubs and perennials. Beyond the play structure, a large tree shades the area, providing landscape interest, and perhaps even a place for adventurous young feet to climb. When the children are grown, this design can be adapted as a playground for older folk by removing the playhouse and play structure, and planting a lawn, or a flower or vegetable garden. Here is a special backyard designed for both children and adults. The yard offers youngsters their own place to escape into a world of imagination and discovery without compromising the attractiveness of a garden setting.
